Doorbll is a freelance project created by data engineer Simon Jones, to generate insights into tourism and the short term rental (STR) market.

How does it work?
An automated process scrapes Airbnb, Vrbo and Booking.com for the most popular tourist locations around the world every 2 to 5 months.

This will identify all listings on the map search, and store the available data. Once all listing information is gathered, secondary processes remove spam listings and assign auxiliary labels and categorization.

For less popular locations, we store the location details but do not regularly obtain data. The web scraping process can be manually triggered from each location page as required.

Can I share these reports?

Yes. The data and graphs displayed on this website are provided freely under a Creative Commons Attribution (CC BY) license. You may reproduce and modify the data and graphs for any purposes with attribution. Resale of data from Doorbll.com is not permitted.

Is the data accurate?

Doorbll uses a combination of HTML and API web scraping to obtain data. While human verification checks are done from time to time, it is otherwise assumed all property listings provided by Airbnb, Vrbo and Booking.com are accurate and genuine.

To match properties and hotels listed on the platforms, image recognition software determines if the property photos have similarity above a threshold.

I would like a report for somewhere not listed

Use the Request page to request raw data for a particular location, or data for a particular area of interest (eg: reviews). This will be emailed to you upon completion. While quick requests are typically provided for free, there may be a charge for large datasets or high workload analytics requests.

Can I just access the raw data?

Yes. Each report has links to download listing overviews as a .csv file. This is cleaned data with additional calculated fields. Pricing, calendar availability, reviews and detailed descriptions of each listing are not freely available by default.
